In 82% of clients who develop a foot ulcer, the initial cause is callus formation. Callus formation is related to pressure and plantar shear stress during the push-off phase of walking. In clients with diabetes-related peripheral neuropathy, force or pressure can further contribute to diabetic foot ulcerations.
